L’Orchestra a fiati “Wind Ensemble dell’Università Greensboro del North Carolina” è una banda composta da cinquantacinque studenti di Musica, Danza e Teatro presso l’omonima Università. L’Ensemble è formato da componenti altamente qualificati, sia studenti che dottorandi in musica ed in educazione musicale. Essi sono stati insigniti di numerosi premi a livello regionale e nazionale, ed hanno altresì ottenuto prestigiose borse di studio. L’Ensemble è composto da musicisti che provengono da ben undici Stati ed anche dalla Tailandia. L’Ensemble si è esibito in molteplici occasioni: nel Gennaio del 1992 ha partecipato al “Tributo per John Philip Sousa” davanti ad un pubblico di ben 2.700 persone, presso la Sala Concertistica del John F. Kennedy Center di Washington. Il famoso quotidiano statunitense “The Washington Post” ha espresso giudizi molto favorevoli verso l’Ensemble. Dal 1987, anno della sua prima esibizione, ad oggi, l’ensemble si è esibito in numerose città statunitensi. Da annoverare sono i concerto del 2011 in occasione della Convention dell’Associazione Americana dei Direttori di Bande, ed il concerto nel 2013 nella città di Greensboro in occasione della Conferenza Nazionale dell’Associazione Nazionale dei Direttori di Bande scolastiche.
Dal 1982 il Dr. John R. Locke ricopre la qualifica di Direttore di Bande, di Direttore di Campi estivi musicali, di insegnante di Musica e di Direttore del Wind Ensemble dell’Università Greensboro del North Carolina. Ha conseguito un Diploma di Laurea in Musica presso l’Università del West Virginia ed un Dottorato in Educazione Musicale presso l’Università dell’Illinois. Prima di giungere in North Carolina, il Dr. John Locke ha insegnato Musica presso l’Università del West Virginia, presso l’Università del “Southeast Missouri State” e presso l’Università dell’Illinois. Ha diretto numerose bande musicali in occasioni di importanti manifestazioni musicali di calibro nazionale. Con la sua collaborazione, il Wind Ensemble dell’Università Greensboro del North Carolina ha pubblicato 16 album musicali, fra i quali si annovera “fireworks!”. Oltre a ciò, il Maestro Locke ha diretto la Banda musicale dell’Aeronautica Militare Americana, la Banda musicale dell’Esercito Americano, la Banda della Marina Militare Americana, l’Orchestra a Fiati di Dallas ed altre orchestre a fiati. Nel 2012 il Maestro Locke è stato insignito dal Governatore dello Stato del North Carolina, Beverly Perdue, del prestigioso premio “The Order of the Longleaf Pine Award”. Il Dr. Locke è il fondatore e direttore del progetto inerente il campo estivo musicale dell’Università di Greensboro, uno dei campi estivi musicali più grandi degli Stati Uniti che accoglie ogni anno più di 1.850 studenti ed al quale lavora uno staff formato da circa 160 addetti. Inoltre, il Maestro Locke è il fondatore del Festival di Bande Musicali del North Carolina.
Kevin M. Geraldi è Professore Associato di Conduzione musicale presso l’Università di Greensboro, dove dirige l’Orchestra Sinfonica, l’Orchestra a Fiato e la Casella Sinfonietta. Kevin Geraldi è inoltre Direttore Associato del “Wind Ensemble dell’Università Greensboro del North Carolina”. È coordinatore del Southeast Honor String Festival, è Direttore Associato dei capi estivi musicali e co-dirige il Festival delle Bande musicali. Dr. Geraldi ha conseguito altresì un Diploma di Laurea in Musica presso l’Università del Michigan. Ha conseguito altresì un Diploma in Educazione Musicale all’Università Wesleyan, in Illinois. Kevin Geraldi è stato insignito del prestigioso premio “Thelma A. Robinson Award”, il quale viene conferito ogni due anni dall’Associazione dei Direttori e la Federazione Nazionale dei Clubs Musicali. Infine, Kevin Geraldi è membro di rinomate associazioni musicali, fra le quali si annoverano: l’Associazione dei Direttori di Orchestre studentesche e l’Associazione Nazionale dei Direttori di bande musicali studentesche.
The UNC Greensboro Wind Ensemble is a highly select concert band of fifty-five performers majoring in music at the UNCG School of Music, Theatre and Dance. Performers range from freshmen through masters and doctoral candidates in music performance and music education. Membership in the organization is highly competitive. These students have achieved numerous individual honors including solo competition awards on regional and national levels, music scholarships, undergraduate teaching fellowships, graduate assistantships and fellowships, teaching positions in music at all levels including college, membership in all-state bands, as well as professional performing credentials in orchestras, top military bands and professional quintets. Performers in the current UNCG Wind Ensemble are drawn from eleven states and Thailand. The UNCG Wind Ensemble has enjoyed a distinguished record of performance over the past decade. In January 1992, the UNCG Wind Ensemble performed “A Tribute to John Philip Sousa” to a capacity crowd of 2,700 at the Concert Hall of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. Twice, the Wind Ensemble earned critical acclaim from The Washington Post following concerts in the nation's capital. The Wind Ensemble has performed throughout the eastern United States in recent years including the first-ever performance, in 1987, by a North Carolina collegiate ensemble in Lincoln Center, New York City. The Wind Ensemble recently performed at the 2011 National Convention of the American Bandmasters Association and the 2013 National Conference of the College Band Directors National Association hosted in Greensboro.
Since 1982, Dr. John R. Locke has served on the UNCG School of Music, Theatre and Dance Faculty as Director of Bands, Director of Summer Music Camps, conductor of the Wind Ensemble, and conducting teacher. He holds the Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from West Virginia University and the Doctor of Education degree from the University of Illinois. Prior to his arrival in North Carolina, Dr. Locke held teaching positions in music at West Virginia University, Southeast Missouri State University, and the University of Illinois. He has conducted band performances throughout the country including National Conventions of the MENC, CBDNA, ABA, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the Strathmore Center in Washington, DC, and Lincoln Center in New York City. Under Locke’s leadership, the UNCG Wind Ensemble has released 16 commercially available compact discs including fireworks! which was a Grammy Entry List 2011 CD in two categories, “Classical Album of the Year” and “Best Orchestral Performance.” In addition, he has guest conducted the U.S. Air Force Band, U.S. Army Field Band, U.S. Navy Band, “The President’s Own” U.S. Marine Band, the Dallas Wind Symphony, as well as numerous university bands and all-state honor bands. In July 2012, Locke was honored by NC Governor Beverly Perdue with The Order of the Longleaf Pine Award, the highest civilian honor in North Carolina. In 2014, Locke was named the Marion Stedman Covington Stedman Distinguished Professor of Music at UNCG. At UNCG, Dr. Locke is the founder and director of the Summer Music Camp program, now the largest university music camp in America, enrolling over 1,850 students annually and served by a staff of 160 professionals. He is also the founder of the Carolina Band Festival and Conductors Conference. Since 1977, he has administered summer music camps for over 63,000 students. He is in constant demand as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator for band festivals throughout the United States and Canada.
KEVIN M. GERALDI is Associate Professor of Conducting at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In this capacity, he directs the overall orchestral program, conducts the UNCG Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Band, and Casella Sinfonietta, and is associate conductor of the UNCG Wind Ensemble. He teaches graduate and undergraduate conducting. He coordinates the Southeast Honors String Festival, is associate director of the UNCG Summer Music Camp, and co-directs the Carolina Band Festival and Conductors Conference. Previously, he taught at Lander University in Greenwood, SC, in the public schools of Westchester, IL, and as assistant conductor of the Central Illinois and Michigan Youth Symphonies. A proponent of contemporary music and chamber music, Dr. Geraldi has commissioned and premiered numerous compositions and published articles in leading journals and other publications. Dr. Geraldi holds the Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees in conducting from the University of Michigan where he studied with H. Robert Reynolds and Michael Haithcock. He received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Illinois Wesleyan University, where he studied conducting with Steven Eggleston. Dr. Geraldi is a recipient of the Thelma A. Robinson Award, presented biennially by the Conductors Guild and the National Federation of Music Clubs. He is a member of the Conductors Guild, the College Orchestra Directors Association, the College Band Directors National Association, Music Educators National Conference, Pi Kappa Lambda, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and a National Arts Associate of Sigma Alpha Iota.
